“To Old Settlers, Emigrants, and Others,” 1844.
The Canada Company was formed in 1824 to open western Ontario to settlement. In 1826, it purchased 1.1 million acres (about 445,000 hectares) of land in the Huron tract and another 1.4 million acres (about 567,000 hectares) of Crown reserves scattered throughout the province from the government for $295,000. The Canada Company built roads, brought in settlers, and founded the towns of Guelph, Galt and Goderich. This prospectus identifies the men behind it, its objectives and anticipated benefits for shareholders.
