The Elgin Association's draft constitution for the settlement
of fugitive slaves at Buxton, Kent County, Ontario, 1849.
Not all emigrants who dreamed of a life in Canada came from across the sea. Fugitive
slaves travelled north on the Underground Railway to freedom in Upper Canada.
The draft constitution of the Elgin Association in 1849 outlined Rev. William
King's dream of founding a colony of escaped or freed slaves in Buxton, Kent
County.
