The 2nd edition of the Protocol Specification (ISO 10161-1) was published by ISO in Summer 1997;. It incorporates the changes specified in Defect Reports 1-23 and in ISO 10161:1993 Amendment 1.

Transfer Syntax

Currently there are two encoding schemes applied to the data type values defined in the ASN.1 specified in ISO 10161-1. The mandatory encoding scheme is the Basic Encoding Roules for Abstract Syntax Notation One (defined in ISO 8825-1). A second encoding scheme, EDIFACT is used by some early implementations of the ILL protocol.

Amendments

The following Amendments have been issued for ISO 10161-1:1997

Amendment 1 (to edition 2): Extension "identifier"

Amendment 1 to edition 2 of ISO 10161-1 allows for the use of Object Identifier in the "Identifier" parameter of the Extension data type.

Amendment 2 (to edition 2): Maintenance Agency

Amendment 2 to edition 2 of ISO 10161-1 adds Annex H acknowledging the National Library of Canada as the Maintenance Agency for ISO 10161-1.

Table A-4 Requester State Table - Processing Phase and Table A-5 Requester State Table - Tracking Phase to resolve inconsistency between the transition from the processing phase to the tracking phase of an ILL transaction as described in clause 8.2.2 and the state transitions permitted by the requester state tables (A4 and A5) in Annex A.
