Gideon Matte became King's Private Secretary and receptionist in 1945. Earlier he had managed King's campaign in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. After that campaign, King wrote of Matte: "I was quite impressed with his nature and character and have some thought of bringing him into my office. I think he would be very helpful there." (Diary, August 7, 1945)
