Gerard Brender à Brandis was born in the Netherlands in 1942 and immigrated to Canada in 1947. He received a B.F.A. degree from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, then taught himself the art of bookmaking. Brender à Brandis now works as a wood engraver, book-wright and papermaker. In 1969, he established the Brandstead Press to produce limited editions of wood engravings and lino-cuts.
The Gerard Brender à Brandis fonds includes sketches, tracings, proofs and the manuscripts of texts published by the Brandstead Press. In the fonds there are examples of keepsakes, broadsides, posters and other ephemeral publications, as well as, materials documenting the creation of limited-edition books and portfolios. The fonds contains a collection of exhibition catalogues, clippings (including book and exhibition reviews), as well as, a collection of books and periodicals in which his work has appeared.
