Creating an Artist's Book

Introduction

In this lesson, students ages 13 to 16 will learn to integrate visual arts and language arts as they create their own artist's book.

Students will create their own book according to a specific theme.

Their artist's book can include poetry or a short narrative and be accompanied by prints, paintings, drawings and/or collages. Pages can contain words, art or a combination of both.

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

• apply all steps in the creative process to complete an artist's book, from brainstorming to finished product;
• produce artwork using a variety of media to demonstrate a particular theme, while maintaining creative licence;
• incorporate elements of creative writing with visual arts, challenging conventional notions of format and content for books.

Learning Modifications

• Substitute the papermaking or printmaking portions with other forms of art (e.g., painting, drawing, or collage).
• Choose a theme that students are currently studying.
• Create a book as a class by assigning specific tasks to individual students.
