The Navy and Maritime Forces

At the end of the Second World War, the Royal Canadian Navy employed Gilbert Tucker to produce its official history. After the publication of two very useful volumes, the first dealing with Canada's naval experiences to the end of the First World War and the second the story of naval policy and events ashore in Second World War, the Navy stopped work on the history, but turned Tucker's completed research over to Joseph Schull to produce a popular history of operations at sea. The resulting * The far distant ships has since been reprinted without changes.

The Directorate of History and Heritage of the Department of National Defence has undertaken a new, four-volume naval history, none of which has yet been published. This promises not only to re-investigate the themes covered by Tucker and Schull, but also to update the Navy's story to the present. Until then, Tony German's The sea is at our gates and Marc Milner's Canada's navy are the only comprehensive, modern histories of the Navy.
