Gabriel Dumont 

Like most of the Métis, Gabriel Dumont was illiterate: the only record we have of his conduct of the Métis military defence is what he told others. His account to B.A.T. de Montigny, Biographie et récit de Gabriel Dumont sur les événements de 1885, as edited and used by George Stanley, has long been regarded as the authoritative version of events. A disjointed and differing account appears in Gabriel Dumont speaks. George Woodcock's biography, Gabriel Dumont, is a major interpretive work.
