Genealogical and Family History Information

Published sources, books, articles, government reports, newspapers and so on, can provide a wealth of information for the family historian. This is especially true for the 1885 Northwest Campaign. Close to 6000 men took part in the Northwest Campaign, many of them from eastern Canada, especially Ontario and Quebec. A bewildering number of militia units and locally raised units took part. Before one undertakes research on any aspect of the events of 1885, it is advisable to be familiar with the various regiments and units that saw action during the Campaign. Desmond Morton, in The last war drum -- Toronto : Hakkert, 1972, appends an "Order of Battle" in which he lists the major units and where they served.
