Provenance
The collection of Moodie-Strickland-Vickers-Ewing family papers was acquired from the estate of Patrick Hamilton Ewing, the great-great grandson of Susanna and J.W. Dunbar Moodie. Ewing's mother, Katherine Deeks, a silent film actress, was the daughter of Ethel R. Ewing and Samuel William Ewing of Montreal. Ethel R. Ewing was the daughter of Catherine Moodie Vickers and John Joseph Vickers, a Toronto businessman. Catherine Moodie Vickers was the eldest daughter of Susanna and J.W. Dunbar Moodie. (see the Moodie Family Tree)
After a career in London, and an active role in the Resistance movement during the war, Patrick Hamilton Ewing settled in New York State. Upon the death of his grandmother, the collection of family papers that Ethel had inherited from her mother, Catherine Moodie Vickers, was shipped to Ewing's home and stored, undisturbed, in his attic. After Ewing died in March 1986, the collection was offered to the National Library of Canada and acquired with the assistance of a grant under the terms of the Cultural Property Export and Import Act.
