Activity 1 – Who Were the Key Players?
The purpose of this activity is to increase students' understanding of the roles of different members and organizations in Black communities in Canada. Students will search for key figures or organizations in Black communities and analyze their historical roles.
- Students will use Handout 1.1 to search for some of the notable figures or organizations in Canada's Black communities, to summarize the information they find, and to respond to the analysis questions.
- The sites listed in Activity Resources can also be used in students' research.
- Have students read the "Overview of the Under a Northern Star Collections", by Dr. Afua Cooper, on Library and Archives Canada's Under a Northern Star website. This will give an overview of different key figures and organizations, and help students in their selection in Handout 1.1.
- Students will conduct research in pairs or individually, then as a group will answer the questions provided to facilitate class discussion. Have students jot their main points on chart paper to post for class reference and to help with subsequent activities.
