Activity 2 – Reflection: Why Is this Subject Important?
In this activity, students will reflect on human rights, cultural norms and citizen participation in the past, and compare them to the same issues in today's society. They will express their opinions in a debate or essay format.
- Have students choose one "Debating point" question from Handout 2.1, for response. They can use the research they gathered from Activity 1.1 to help formulate their answers.
- Essay Format – Assign students to groups according to the question they chose. Have them share their responses within their group, then compose a group response to present to the class. Use Evaluation Tool 1 to evaluate individual essays.
- Debate Format -- Students can debate the questions from Handout 2.1 individually or in groups. After each debate, classmates vote on which side had the strongest arguments. Continue the debates until everyone has had a turn debating. Use Evaluation Tool 2 to evaluate discussions or debates.
