Department of Immigration and Colonization: Passenger Lists, 1925-1935 (RG 76 C1)

About the Records

In the course of your genealogical research, you will inevitably discover an immigrant ancestor. Knowing when and how that individual arrived in Canada is a major piece of the family puzzle. If you do not know where your ancestor came from or their ethnic origin, immigration records can help you find the answer.

In 1803, the British Parliament enacted legislation to regulate vessels carrying emigrants to North America. The master of the vessel was required to prepare a list of passengers and to deposit it at the port of departure. Please note that there are no comprehensive nominal lists of immigrants arriving in Canada before 1865. Few such lists have survived.

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) holds the Canadian immigration records for the years 1865 to 1935. The passenger lists are the official immigration records for those who arrived in Canada by ship. They also include the names of returning Canadians, visitors, tourists and passengers in transit to the United States.

The passenger list is a manifest of persons arriving at an official port of entry on a particular ship on a given date. Generally speaking, each manifest gives:

  • the name of the ship
  • its port(s) and date(s) of departure
  • its port(s) and date(s) of arrival in Canada
  • the name, age, sex, profession or occupation, nationality and destination of each passenger on board; it also includes the name and address of the nearest relative from where the passenger came and the name and address of the individual or organization to which the passenger was going.

The microfilms were produced by the Department of Citizenship and Immigration during the 1950s and 1960s. The originals were destroyed after the microfilming. Please note that some pages were missed during the microfilm process; therefore, since the digital images were created from the microfilms, it is possible that the page of interest to you does not exist. Also, unfortunately, due to the poor quality of the microfilm, we are unable to produce a more legible digital copy.

The passenger lists from 1865 to 1935 were transferred to Library and Archives Canada (LAC) by Citizenship and Immigration Canada in four groups: the 1865-1900 records in 1971, the 1900-1908 records in 1980, the 1908-1918 records in 1984, and the 1919-1935 records in 1997. The 1908-1918 portion contains a few lists dated as late as 1921 at the end of the 1918 reels.

Between 1919 and 1924 the Department of Immigration and Colonization introduced the use of the individual Form 30A as the official record of immigration. The use of Form 30A was discontinued as of January 1, 1925. From that date, the use of large sheet manifests was reinstated.

Digital images of the passenger lists from 1865 to 1922 are available online by consulting the Passenger Lists, 1865-1922 database. You can search the images by date, ship's name and port. A nominal index for passengers' names is available for arrivals at the Port of Quebec for the years 1865 to 1900.

The microfilm reels for Form 30A, 1919-1924 have been digitized and can be viewed online. Please note that no nominal index is available.

A nominal index for the passenger lists from 1925 to 1935 is available online. This database was created in collaboration with Pier 21 Society, based on a series of old nominal indexes. The database generally does not include the names of returning Canadians, tourists, visitors and immigrants in transit to the United States. The database provides the volume, page and microfilm reel numbers for the list on which the name of a passenger appears. After searching the database, you can now view the actual page of the original passenger lists through this online tool.

Starting in 1905, the government of Canada began posting immigration officials at the American east-coast ports of New York, Baltimore, Boston, Portland, Philadelphia and Providence. Those officials created Canadian passenger lists for people arriving at those American ports who indicated that they were proceeding directly to Canada. This is why Library and Archives Canada holds passenger lists for American ports. They are not the same format as those created by the United States government.

From 1925 to 1935, the names of passengers arriving in Canada by ship were recorded on a standard form with the following column headings:

How the Records Are Arranged on the Microfilm Reels

The microfilm reels have been digitized and the images appear in the same order as on the microfilm reels. The lists of passengers are arranged by port and date of arrival and are identified with volume and page numbers. You can browse through the images as you would through a microfilm reel. You can move through the images one by one, or skip ahead by entering a new page (image) number in the page navigation box. The records are not searchable by name.
