The Deputy Minister of the Department of Interior was responsible for the general administration of the department. The office was filled by Edmund A. Meredith (July, 1873 - October, 1878); William Buckingham (October, 1878 - November, 1878); Lt. Col. John S. Dennis (November, 1878 - December, 1881); Lindsay Russell (January, 1882 - June, 1883); Alexander M. Burgess (July, 1883 - March, 1897); James A. Smart (April, 1897 - December, 1904); William W.
