Scope and content
Sub-series consists of records relating to the Red River Rebellion military land warrants. Warrant numbers 0002-1594 entitling a free grant of 160 acres of land, issued by the Minister of Militia and Defence to officers and enlisted men of the First (Ontario) Battalion and Second (Quebec) Battalion of Rifles stationed in Manitoba are found in volumes 1608 to 1627. Often attached to these records are supporting documents. Also included in this sub-series are receipt numbers 1-914 for Military Bounty Land Warrants dating from 1873 to 1877 (Vol. 1628). The sub-series also includes aperture cards containing alphabetical lists and location register by Military Bounty Land Warrants numbers issued to the member of the Red River Expeditionary Force, 1870-1875. These cards relate to warrants 1 to 1594. The sub-series also consists of a single, un-numbered, file containing a variety of correspondence and departmental memoranda relating to undelivered land warrants issued to members of the militia who participated in the Red River Expedition, and to members of the North-West Mounted Police (volume 3170). The file jacket indicates that these documents are draft copies of records filed under 1993280. The latter is a central registry file entitled "List of the Red River Rebellion Land Warrant, 1909-1948." It is found in the central registry of the Dominion Lands Branch (MIKAN record number 134033). Since a number of these records either originate with the Lands Patent Branch and are signed by N.O. Coté, the Controller, or originate elsewhere and are addressed to Mr. Coté, it is likely that the file was created and/or used by Mr. Coté in his capacity as a senior administrator with the Dept. of the Interior. The file was found with several other un-numbered files which are also believed to have been created and/or used by Coté (see MIKAN record number 156360). Many of the records in this draft file are annotated.
