Scope and content
Sub-series consists of land assignment numbers 1708 to 20386. In law an assignment generally refers to the transfer of an interest in a lease, permit, license of occupation or other instrument, by writing. The assignee then stands in the place of the assignor. Under the Dominion Lands Act, assignments were a specialized document noting the transfer of property (by the assignor) to a second party (the assignee) prior to filing a homestead fiat. Title automatically went to the second party on completion of the conditions of improvement. Assignments were often used by parties interested in land speculation.
