Sub-series consists of parish returns for persons who have respectively proven their rights before Commissioners Machar and Ryan to participate in the distribution of the 1,400,000-acre land grant reserved for children of Métis heads of family (including the heirs of deceased claimants) under 33 Vic., c. 3, s. 31, or in the distribution of scrip as Métis heads of family (including the heirs of deceased claimants) under 37 Vic., c. 20. Depending on the number of claims reported from each parish, the returns are generally organized under four headings: Métis children over the age of 18; Métis children under the age of 18; Métis heads of family; and heirs to each of the above classes of claimants. Within each section, the claimants are listed in alphabetical order, with each entry providing a description of the claimants's occupation. In the case of minors, the father's name and the date of the claimant's 18th birthday are usually also recorded; and in the case of heirs, the proportion of the inheritance is noted. In separate columns along the left side are recorded the entry number (that is, the consecutive numbering of the entry within the parish) and the claim number.
