Scope and content

One sheet folded into several pages, with text and images forming the 'souvenir supplement' to the Montreal Daily Star, illustrating and describing events around the city and the Winter Carnival. Cover: "The Sleigh Drive - Getting Ready" by Henri Julien, depicting a busy crowd in a snowy scene with people riding horse-drawn sleighs. Page: An article on new and old Montreal, with several illustrations of "Ancient Montreal": "Place d'Armes, Governor Carleton Reviewing his Troops Before Attacking Ethen Allan at Longue Pointe, 1775", "Montreal Harbour, 1818", "General View of Montreal, 1803", "Notre-Dame Street, 1804", "Great St. James Street, 1837", and "Montreal Costumes, 1800". Page: Entitled "Modern Montreal, 1883". Continuation of the article on old and new Montreal, with several illustrations, including a detailed aerial view of the city, with an accompanying "list of objects of interest in key to the city". Double page: lithograph "The Ice Palace - Attack and Defense by the Snowshoers of Montreal" by H. Julien, depicting the ice palace at Montreal's winter carnival surrounded by a crowd and fireworks. In the upper left corner, there is an illustration entitled "Tandem Drive", and in the lower right corner, a circular illustration of torchbearing habitants entitled "Coming down the Mountain". There is also an article about the Winter Carnival. Back page: Image and text, "Tobogganing on Mount Royal", showing a woman and a man in habitant costume tobogganing down the hill.
