Scope and content

Engraving by Sir Samuel Luke Fildes (1843-1927) depicting Charles Dickens' study at Gad's Hill, just after Dickens' death in 1870. The engraving was published in the following Christmas number of The Graphic and was widely reproduced. On the desk in front of the window, the artist has included a calendar with the date Wednesday, June 8. In front of the empty chair, there sits a pen and paper on the desk.
