Scope and content
This is a photographic reproduction of a painting destroyed in the Parliament Buildings fire of 1916. A booklet describing the individuals protrayed in the painting can be found in the artist's file. The work represented is one of three paintings executed by Bell-Smith concerning Sir John Thompson's death and funeral. The first of the three paintings is held by Library and Archives Canada (see acc. no. 1994-315); the third is unlocated. Sir John Thompson (1845-1894) died at Windsor Castle on December 12, 1894, of a heart attack. This image depicts the arrival of the "Blenheim" bearing the body of Sir John, at Halifax on January 1st, 1894.
