Scope and content

Image depicts the mortally wounded General James Wolfe surrounded by a group of men including numerous grenadiers and a native man. In the background the battle at the Plains of Abraham, Quebec, continues.

Additional information

This is one of a series of works copied from William Woollett's 1776 print that was based on Benjamin West's painting, "Death of Wolfe." In this case the Italian engraver, Angelo Zaffonato produced this print for sale in French shops. (See Alan McNairn, Behold the Hero: General Wofe and the Arts in the Eighteenth Century, p. 152)

Custodial history
This version of the "Death of Wolfe" print was acquired sometime before 1932 from an unknown source. Initial cataloguing date, written on the verso: 13/2/32.
