Scope and content

This image celebrates the British defence of the Isle of Jersey against French invasion in 1781, and also pays tribute to a young Major, Francis Peirson. In the scene, amidst billowing flags and clouds of smoke, the stricken Major stands on the right with his hands outstretched. Around him, soldiers in uniform wield swords and guns, while people watch from a window on the left.
