Etching of unknown provenance depicting the old Montcalm House, Quebec, with several people standing around it. Henry Ivan Neilson (1865-1931) was born in Quebec City, the son of John Neilson, explorer and land surveyor. He was educated at the Quebec Seminary and Nicolet College, and later studied art in Europe. He drew much of his subject matter from the landscapes of northern Quebec and Labrador where he travelled. One of his etchings was reproduced in Newton McTavish's "The Fine Arts in Canada" (1925). In 1921 Neilson was appointed professor of drawing, painting and anatomy at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Quebec.
