Portée et contenu

A series of hand-coloured engravings by an unknown artist depicting American Indians in native costumes. Each print has a German title, indicated at the lower centre. Different sources have been used, but two depictions are copied directly from George Catlin. These are Peh-to-Pee-Kiss and Cornstalk. The prints are wood engravings, colour stencilled in watercolour. Four primaries are used - red, yellow, blue and green, with an occasional use of skintone pink. Material is of unknown provenance, acquired sometime before the initial cataloguing date of 16/2/22.

Information additionnelle

An inventory list of these prints is found in the George Catlin artist file, 705-92. Note in file: The prints were originally enclosed in an album folder entitled "American Indians - German Prints - Grasset. St. Sauveur". However, stylistically the attribution is questionable and two prints are definitely after Catlin originals.
