Portée et contenu

Photomechanical reproduction of a print (original c. 1777) depicting a view of an estate in England, the seat of Lord Amherst of Holmsdale. Maj. General Jeffrey Amherst (1717-1797) commanded the forces that took Montreal in 1759. He was created Baron Amherst of Holmesdale in 1776. Amherst rebuilt the house on his family estate, naming it Montreal. The estate is shown in the distance in the landscape, while in the foreground, on the right, a group of sheep graze at the foot of a tree. This view, with the sheep in the foreground, corresponds to an original print engraved by Royce (see acc. no. 1990-053-4). The original print engraved by Watts, after Sandby (see, for example, acc. no. 1988-047-1) depicts a closer view, with a man on a horse in the foreground. This reproduction corresponds to the Royce engraving, so the attribution of Watts here seems incorrect.
