Etching depicts a scene involving Jean Ribaut, a French naval officer who helped to colonize what would become the southeastern United States. In 1562, he led an expedition to the New World that eventually founded Fort Caroline in what is now Jacksonville, Florida, as a haven for the Huguenots. In this image of colonization, a costumed Ribaut stands beside a Native man, who gestures towards a column on a mound. Native people look on from the left, while European officers look on from the right. This plate was part of a publication by Roux de Rochelle, who served as French Minister to the United States. His work "Etats-Unis d'Amérique" is a well-known piece of Americana and includes plates depicting a variety of subjects, including Native Americans and early American settlers.
