Portée et contenu

Coloured print after the 1892 painting by Thomas M. Hemy, depicting the sinking of the H.M.S. Birkenhead at sea. On 26 February 1852, while transporting troops, the ship was wrecked at Gansbaai near Cape Town, South Africa. There were not enough lifeboats for all the passengers, and the soldiers famously stood firm, allowing the women and children to board the boats safely.
