Fonds consists of textual records relating to curling-local, regional, 1866-1974, 1.03 m; curling-provincial, 1888-1974, 1.62 m; curling-national, international, 1924-1973, 36 cm; curling-general, 1909-1973, 31 cm; Ward-personal, 1882-1974, 15 cm; scrapbooks, 1914-1972, 68 cm. The fonds contains photographs relating to curling and to the activities of Howard Hyland Ward. This includes photos of the Macdonald Brier Curling Championship meets at Halifax, N.S., 1951 and Winnipeg, Man. 1952; and a copy of a portrait of the Scottish Curling Team which toured Canada, Winnipeg, Man., 1903, photo by Bryant Studio. Also included are three YMCA medals, 1906-1908; and The Trades and Labor Congress of Canada Golden Jubilee Delegate's Medal, 1934.

Biography / Administrative history
Howard Hyland Ward (1904-1974), born at Arkona, Ont. moved with his family to Stratford, Ont. and received his education there from the Central Business College. He was active in the Stratford Y.M.C.A. participating in gymnastics, baseball, hockey and track and field.
Mr. Ward served as Deputy Minister of Labour for Canada from 1923 to 1934 when he retired due to ill health. He joined the Ottawa Curling Club in 1935 and remained active as both a player and club official (in various capacities) for the rest of his life. As Historian, he was responsible for the production of the club's Centenary History, 1851-1951. He also compiled and maintained club match records and was responsible for the trophies and the recording of final results.
The Ottawa Curling Club has been a member of the Canadian Branch since the Branch's founding in 1852. As a member of the Ottawa Club, Ward soon became involved in Branch activities. He was appointed Branch Historian in 1954. In his capacity as historian he not only compiled the records of the various Branch trophy competitions, but also aided in the production of the Branch Annual Reports. He also compiled histories of various Branch trophies and researched the history of the Branch itself, various member clubs and the game of curling in Canada.
