Scope and content

Fonds consists of miscellaneous letters, forms, passports, certificates and press passes accumulated and used by Duncan Cameron on Canadian and foreign coverage during his career as a photo journalist with Capital Press Limited. Fonds also consists of photographic material depicting political figures and events; cultural figures; views of Ottawa and major centres across Canada, Ontario, historical photographs; political, social, and national events occuring in Ottawa ; the Royal Family. Also included are photographs of Duncan Cameron with various individuals at various world locations during his career as a photojournalist; portraits of Duncan Cameron, fellow pressmen, and foreign dignitaries.

Biography / Administrative history

Duncan Cameron, photojournalist, was born at Glasgow, Scotland. He graduated from Stow College, Glasgow, with a certificate in Photography and Journalism. From 1952 to 1953 he was employed by the London Daily Express. In 1954, he emigrated to Canada, joined Capital Press Ltd., Ottawa in 1956 and subsequently became President in 1962, a position he held until 1976. From 1963-1976, he was also a contract photographer with Time Life Inc., the only Canadian to do so. During this time, he travelled extensively in all continents, accompanying various Canadian and international dignitaries. In 1976, he joined the staff of the National Photography Collection of the Public Archives of Canada through an Executive Exchange Programme of the Public Service Commission. From 1976 to 1985, he was the Photo Custodian of the National Photography
Collection; his work was included in "Reflections on a Capital: Twelve Ottawa Photographers".
The National Archives holds 175,000 of his prints, negatives and slides.

Textual material received in 1977 from Duncan Cameron of Ottawa, Ont. Photographs received in 1973 and 1974 from Capital Press, Ottawa, Ontario and from Duncan Cameron of Ottawa, Ontario, between the years 1967 and 1976.
