Biography / Administrative history

Lord Lisgar was born in Bombay, India and educated at Oxford. He was a Conservative MP, 1831-1855, and Lord High Commissioner of Ionian Island, 1855-1859. He was Governor General, New South Wales, 1861-1867 and administrator of Canada, 1 December 1868 to 1 February 1869. He served as Governor General 2 February 1869 to 21 June 1872. He supported Confederation, and organized the Governor-Generals Foot Guards. See: Canadian Encyclopedia, p. 1011; Encyclopedia Canadiana, Vol. 6; p.146.
