Biography / Administrative history
The Liberal Party of Canada, a political party, was established in November 1932 as a federation of provincial Liberal Parties. Vincent Massey was the first president, followed by Norman P. Lambert in 1935. The National Office was disbanded after the 1940 general election, but reorganized in 1943 under the direction of the National Liberal Committee directed by J. Gordon Fogo and Alan G. McLean. Following the 1945 election the National Office reopened with McLean as Director and Fogo as President.
During 1959-1960 the National Office was reorganized and expanded. The position of General Secretary was abolished and James Scott was appointed to the new position of Director of Organization in 1960.
The name of the Federation was changed to Liberal Federation of Canada in 1964, and to Liberal Party of Canada in 1970. During the period 1967-1968 the National Office underwent a further reorganization and expansion, with the establishment of separate departments of Policy Research, Organization, Communications and Administration under the National Director. Among those identified with the party during this transition was Richard J. Stanbury (1923-), president of the L.F.C. (1968-1973).
Additional information
Most of this fonds' original materials were transferred from the Liberal Party in 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1973-1976. Several posters were received from the Canadian War Museum in 1972. The microfilm was copied from originals in the possession of Dr. M. Foster, M.P., in 1971. Papers of the Women's Liberal Federation of Canada were received from the Women's Federation Headquarters, Ottawa, in 1975. The 18 posters, 1984 (accession 1989-374 DAP) were acquired in 1984, through Gerry Cumming of the National Archives of Canada.
