Biography / Administrative history

Prime Minister of Canada, lawyer, writer, politician.

Pierre Elliott Trudeau was born on 18 October 1919 in Montreal, Quebec, the eldest son of Charles-Émile and Grace (Elliott) Trudeau. He graduated from the Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in 1940, continuing his studies at the Université de Montréal (L.L.B. 1943), Harvard University (M.A. in Political Economy 1945), the Université de Paris, and the London School of Economics. He was called to the Quebec Bar in 1943 and was made Q.C. in 1969.

From 1949 to 1951 Trudeau served as an economic and policy advisor in the Privy Council Office. In 1951 he returned to Montreal, where he practiced law and wrote for "Cité Libre", which he had co-founded in 1950, and for other journals. He became a Professor of Public Law at the Université de Montréal in 1962.

First elected to the House of Commons in 1965 for Montreal-Mount Royal, Trudeau served as Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Pearson from January 1966 until April 1967, when he entered Pearson's cabinet as Attorney General and Minister of Justice. On 6 April 1968, Trudeau was selected as the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

Two weeks later he became the fifteenth Prime Minister of Canada. He remained Prime Minister through the elections of 1968, 1972, and 1974. Following the Progressive Conservative victory in May 1979, Trudeau served as Leader of the Opposition until he returned to the PMO after the election of February 1980. He resigned as Leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister in June 1984.

He is the author of numerous books, including "Two Innocents in Red China", "Federalism and the French Canadians", "Lifting the Shadow of War", and the pamphlet "Fatal Tilt: Speaking Out About Sovereignty".

Trudeau died on 28 September 2000.
