Scope and content

Series consists of a wide variety of material including all manner of pamphlets, catalogues, press clippings, advertising literature, programmes, etc. The subjects covered are many and varied. The files contain much information about King himself, Parliament, federal government departments, elections, major Canadian and world events. However, there is much more than politics in this series. There are files on artists, cultural groups, social work, travel, and prominent Canadians in many fields. This series is a rich source of information on numerous aspects of Canadian and international life in the last portion of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century. The series is divided into two parts: King's pre-prime ministerial period (1876-1920) and the period during much of which he was prime minister (1921-1950). Since many subjects are common to both sections, it will be necessary to look at both portions. Additional material, found after the series had been organized, was put into volumes 241-245. Researchers should check this portion to verify if there is additional information available. The series consists of snapshots of William Lyon Mackenzie King at the grave of his grandfather William Lyon Mackenzie, Toronto, Ont.; the interior of Maple Leaf Gardens presumably during centennial celebrations, Toronto, Ont.; photo of Cabinet Ministers wives including: Mrs. J.H. King, Mrs. Charles Stewart, Mrs. W.R. Motherwell, Mrs. Ernest Lapointe, Mrs. Charles A. Dunning, Mrs. Lucien Cannon, Mrs. Robert Forke, Mrs. Peter Heenan; two plaques: one commemorating the 1943 and 1944 Quebec conferences; the other, the end of the war of 1812-1814; view of Quebec Citadel showing King leaving plaque ceremony commemorating Quebec conferences; arm house, Stoney Creek, Ont.; unveiling of nameplate Leoforos Mackenzie King, Patras, Greece; views of King accepting Louis Pasteur medal. In addition, the series includes a good luck token distributed by the Davenport Liberal Association during Neil Cameron's election campaign of 1940; and William Lyon Mackenzie King's delegate badge for the National Liberal Federal-Advisory Council, 1943. Series consists of nine maps. Two maps related to Prime Minister King's tour in 1944 of Canadian armed forces bases in Southern England. The base map of one item is the ordnance survey of Great Britiain (fourth edition); the base map of the other is the 1940 ordnance survey of England and Wales. The third map is a road map of Canada and the northern United States, highlighting the Trans-Canada Highway. Six maps forcus on the National Capital Region; thse include photomaps of Gatineau Park and Hull, plans of downtown Ottawa and a map of northern United States, eastern Ontario and western Quebec. Also included is a map of the harbour at Saint John, New Brunwick.
