Scope and content

The miscellaneous papers series consists of Rev. William King's manuscript autobiography; a typed transcript of his autobiography, 130 pages, dated 1892; correspondence, 1847-1889; records relating to the Buxton Mission and the Elgin Association; printed material relating to slavery in the United States and the anti-slavery movement; and personal manuscripts and legal papers documenting his life in Scotland, United States, and Canada.

Arrangement note
Several over-size documents have been removed from the files and placed in horizontal storage as volumes 2 to 4. Volume 2 holds a petition from the township of Raleigh concerning the settlement of Blacks. Volume 3 holds three documents: "Fugitive Slaves in Canada", dated Buxton Mission, 3 Sept. 1860; The Free Church, 18 Nov. 1859; and Free South Leith Church, 28 Nov. 1859. Volume 4 holds two posters titled "Fugitive Slaves in Canada", pertaining to public meetings in Leith, 1859 and Dumfries, 1860, Scotland. The typed transcript of King's autobiography, which was acquired after the microfilm copy was made and is therefore not available on the microfilm, has been removed from volume 1 and placed in volume 5 to make it accessible to the public.
