Scope and content
Sub-series consists of correspondence related to the death of Sir John Thompson, 1894. In addition to letters written to Lady Thompson there are letters and cables to Sir Mackenzie Bowell and Sir Charles Tupper which apparently were given to Lady Thompson. Available on microfilm, reel C-10708 (Volume 292). Sub-series also includes a tag signed by Queen Victoria which accompanied Thompson's coffin from England to Canada. There is also a letter from Queen Victoria to Lady Thompson, 14 February 1895. This letter is the companion letter written by Queen Victoria to Lord Aberdeen 13 February 1895 which is available in the Morris Norman Collection, R 1300. Please note that the originals have been withdrawn from circulation. Copies of the Queen Victoria items are available in volume 316. Volumes 317 to 319 contain illuminated addresses which Lady Thompson received after Sir John's death. Volume 317 contains an illuminated memorial address presented to Lady Thompson by the Senate of the University of Toronto and signed by William Mulock, Vice Chancellor of the Senate. The address was prepared by Toronto artist Robert M. Williams. Volume 318 contains an illuminated address presented to Lady Thompson by the members of the Liberal Conservative Party in the House of Commons and the Senate. The signatures of all the party members are attached. Volume 319 contains a resolution by the City of Ottawa expressing sorrow at the death of Sir John Thompson and extending sympathy to Lady Thompson, dated 17 December 1894. It is signed by the mayor, George Cox and the City Clerk, John Henderson and includes the seal of the city.
