Scope and content
Registers of petitions received in the Civil Secretary's office, with notations of the action taken on them, 1830-1832 and 1834-1841, form volumes 1-5; while undated petitions for pensions, pardons, appointments and other benefits, 1792-1841, form volumes 6-12. Addresses of Loyalty to Sir Charles Poulett Thomson, 1839-1840; and replies to the circular on the union of Upper and Lower Canada, 1839-1840, are found in volumes 12-14. Addresses to Lord Elgin following the Montreal riots of 1849, and petitions and addresses on temperance, 1856, have been removed from volumes 13-18 and reintegrated into the Provincial Secretary's numbered correspondence files (RG 5, C 1). Speeches and Messages of the Lieutenant Governor to the Legislature and Addresses from it to him, 1796-1840 form a final sub-series in volumes 18-28. These sub-series are closely linked to other series of incoming correspondence and to records of Parliament, as noted above.
