Scope and content

By a statute of 1828, annual returns of persons naturalized were to be submitted by the county or district registrars to the Provincial Secretary and Registrar. The surviving records appear to be the actual registers, with signatures of applicants for naturalization, rather than a report or abstract. Name, ocupation and place of residence were recorded; age or date of immigration was sometimes also noted. Only the head of a household was named, and British subjects by birth did not require naturalization.
