Scope and content
Sub-series consists of records created by the Circuit Court office in Montreal. The records include petitions for citizenship (with oaths of residence and allegiance) and naturalization certificates issued by a Justice of the Peace authorized to take oaths under the Naturalization Act (1857-1916). These records usually contain the name, age, residence, former residence, length of residence in Canada and occupation of the petitioners. Also, included are various naturalization registers (1857-1955) which often contain very detailed information such as name, date and place of birth, nationality, date of entry into Canada (sometimes including ship and port), occupation, place of residence, martial status, physical features, etc. of persons to whom citizenship certificates were issued.
