Scope and content
Series consists of surviving correspondence relating to all aspects of the Adjutant General's responsibilities for the organization of the militia, including matters of dress and equipment, discipline, as well as the appointment, promotion and retirement of officers. The headquarters files contain incoming and outgoing correspondence which refers to general matters related to the operation of the Adjutant General's Office, as well as correspondence referring to more that one unit. Several militia returns and lists of officers recommended for commissions appear throughout the correspondence and often include the officers' places of residence and civilian occupations.
