Scope and content

Series consists of a wide range of registers of marine certificates. The series includes certificates of competency and service for masters, mates, and marine engineers of inland, coasting, and sea-going vessels. The series also includes registers of examinations and certificate renewals.

Researchers should also be aware that other marine certificate files may be found in the Headquarters central registry series, the Marine Group series, the Coast Guard series, as well as in regional office series. The records supporting crew certification were found in the former blocks 8600 (Ships Officers), 8650 (Seamen), and 8800 (Seamen - Shipping Masters); in the new file classification system, records relating to crew certification may be found under block 8600 (Certification and Pilotage), subdivided according to the nature of the crew member (i.e., masters and mates, engineers, seafarers, and pilotage).
