Scope and content
Series consists of the central registry filing system maintained by the Department of Justice since its formation in 1868. Within this system, files are not differentiated by specific subject, but arranged according to a sequential six-figure number that is unrelated to the file's provenance or subject. The sequential file number also does not reflect any of the organizational structure of the entity within the Department that is responsible for the file. As a result, the Central Registry is the largest series within the Department of Justice fonds, and includes several bodies of records that have been extracted or isolated from the central registry over the life of the Department. These records include the "judges files" (R188-41-6-E) and the "Extradition files" (R188-42-8-E).
