Additional information

The accession includes records from the Franz Johnston fonds, which were used as research material during the preparation of an unpublished biography by his son Paul Rodrik and daughter-in-law Mary Rodrik (née Bishop; later Challice). Also included are records created and accumulated by the Rodriks relating to this work. As well, there are records relating to the Bishop family.

Physical condition note
One of the chalk drawings requires conservation because of a large hole in the centre of the work.

Custodial history
The scrapbook kept by Franz Johnston was purchased in 1997 at auction at Sotheby's in Toronto, which sold it on behalf of Mary Challice. The rest of the material was donated by Mary Challice in 1997. Most of the material was transferred to the National Archives from the custody of Ritchie's auction house in Toronto, which had received it on consignment from Mary Challice. A small amount of material was picked up from the home of Mary Challice's friend, Rosemary Southworth of Flesherton, Ontario, and the diary was received directly from Mary Challice in Markdale, Ontario. All the material had been originally collected by Mary Challice, who had inherited some of it from her husband Paul Rodrik.
