Scope and content
Series consists of two groups of detailed statistical compilations relating to immigration to Canada between 1880 and 1964. Volumes 25-64 and 61A-61G consist of 26 numbered and 7 unnumbered ledgers of monthly statistical tabulations of immigrants for the period 1880-1963. The records from 1903 onwards appear to be in several overlapping (or duplicated) series whose interrelationships have not yet been researched. The records consist largely of monthly statistics for immigrants (accepted and rejected) arranged by ocean or land (Canada/United States border) port of arrival, and giving a varying amount of other statistical information. Depending on the time period, the fields may include some or all of the following: sex, age category, marital status, nationality or ethnic group, person to whom destined, language, occupation, cash and effects on hand; mode of arrival, place or province of destination, and United States state of last permanent residence; and reasons for rejection if applicable. There are also special categories for refugees, including numerous special tabulations of Hungarian refugees, dated 1956-1960, (volumes 61A to 61G and volume 61 book 23); for non-immigrants, 1959-1961, (volume 62 book 24) and C.L.P.R. statistics, 1962-1963, (volume 63 book 25). Volumes 16-24 consist of a variety of bound ledgers, loose tabular statements, and notes on immigration statistics in the period 1899-1964 (but mainly 1924-1964). These include general immigration statistical statements by month, 1930-1964, (volumes 19-23), by fiscal year, 1924-1952, (volumes 17-18 and 24) and unidentified, n.d., (volume 23); arrivals by land and ocean ports, by fiscal year, 1937-1952, (volume 24); tourist and non-immigrant traffic (admissions and rejections), 1929-1951, (volumes 23-24); a variety of deportation statistics organized by calendar year, by reason for deportation, and otherwise, 1926-1964, (volumes 16, 23); and in volume 16, statistics for special groups including Jewish immigrants (1899-1939), refugees generally (1930-1945), Germans, Austrians, and Czechs (1926-1939), Japanese (1928-1939) and wartime British child evacuees (1940-1941). There are also nominal lists in some files; these are indicated in the finding aid.
