Scope and content
Sub-series consists of the records of the 50,000 series that was created in 1948 when it became apparent that the original secret and top secret file system, the small "s" series was not able to expand enough to accommodate the amount of material that the Department of External Affairs was creating. This sub-series is organized numerically in the same manner as the 40 series and the small "s" series. Once again the suffix for each file number is -40. Subjects were given the next consecutive file number when the series began, but as with the "40 series", similar subjects were filed together. An example is the 50069-40 file which was the department's main file on the Korean War. The file expanded into 86 parts and then expanded again to 50069-J-40. Secret and top secret material filed in this system includes records relating to Atomic Energy, NATO, United Nations, the Korean War, Security and Intelligence matters, Export of Arms, Commonwealth relations, International Commission for Supervision and Control in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, relations with various countries around the world and a variety of other issues relating to Canada's foreign policy in the post war period.
