Biography / Administrative history
In June 1913 the Minister of Militia and Defence purchased land at Valcartier to develop as a Militia training camp. During the First World War the area served as a concentration area for the 1st Contingent and later units raised for the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Following the war there was little activity at the camp except for some militia training. Between 1933-36 the National Defence developed the camp further as part of the Unemployment Relief Programme, constructing fifteen concrete barrack blocks and roads. During the Second World War Valcartier served as an advanced infantry training area and as a concentration area for units heading overseas and at the end of the war it served as a demobilization centre. In 1952 Valcartier was designated a permanent camp and after a rebuilding program many units of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Brigade were stationed at the camp. Seventeen Regular Force units were at Valcartier by 1960. The camp became a Canadian Forces Base on 27 January 1966. On 31 December 1968 the Quartier General 5e Groupement de combat and CFB Valcartier were integrated under the operational control of the base commander who reported to Mobile Command. CFB Valcartier was to provide administrative and support services to those units in its area and provide service support elements for 5e Groupement de combat. Its initial order of battle in 1969 consisted of the following: Quartier General 5e Groupement de combat; 12e Regiment blinde du Canada; 5e Regiment d'artillerie legere du Canada; 5e Escadron du genie du Canada; 2e Bataillon, Royal 22e Regiment; 3e Bataillon, Royal 22e Regiment; La Musique du Royal 22e Regiment; 5e Bataillon des services du Canada; 5e Unite Medicale de groupement de combat; Hopital des Forces Canadiennes; Detachement 15 Dental Unit; 14 Service Detention Barracks; Combat Arms School Detachment, Valcartier; and 5e Unite de Controle Aerien Tactique. In 2011, Valcartier Garrison has two formations: 5 Area Support Group (5 ASG) and 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (5 CMBG). RG 24 General Inventory
