Scope and content
Sub-series consists of lists of immigrants entering Canada overland along the Canada-United States border between 1908 and 1935. The lists also include records of immigrants arriving in Canada via ferries at fresh-water and some sea ports. The border records of entry, also known as border entry lists, are the overland counterpart of the ships passenger manifests. Before 1908, the Canadian government did not document the entry of immigrants into Canada over the U.S. border. Between April and December 1908, Canada established approximately 70 official "border ports of entry" and unofficial or secondary inspection posts. These posts were often located at existing Customs posts. Customs officers acted as Immigration officers in meeting trains, ferries, and, in certain places, road and pedestrian traffic crossing the border and compiled lists of accepted and rejected immigrants and returning Canadians. By 1918, border entry ports had also been established in the United States to intercept passengers on the major train and ferry routes into Canada, at places including Boston and Portland, Maine, as well as a number of border and lake towns in Vermont and New York State.
