Sub-series consists of files relating in particular to the activities of various mining and petroleum companies in the North as well as the Atomic Energy Control Board, the Mines Ministers' Conferences, the World Petroleum Congress, forest management, surveys, water power developments, including those by the Calgary Power Company in the Rocky Mountains' parks and forest reserves, the Dominion Water Power Act, environmental protection, the transfer of resources, mining regulations, the Prospectors Assistance Program, various legal disputes over the use of resources, departmental policy on resource development dating back to the turn of the century, and petroleum and gas reserves.

Biography / Administrative history

In 1959, the Resources Division was established to replace the Mining and Lands Division. It therefore became the heir to, and incorporated many files into its registry system from, a long line of resource, lands, and mining-oriented units: Timber, Mines, Grazing and Irrigation Branch; Mines Branch; Mining Lands and Yukon Branch; Mining Lands Branch; Lands Section; Federal Lands Registry; Mining Lands Section; Lands Division; and Mining and Lands Division. The Resources Division was responsible for oil and gas, mining, forests, and lands in the North; lands in the south remaining under federal jurisdiction after 1930; and for seed grain and fodder indebtedness. Its file registry numbers were prefixed by an "R", some numbers coming from the 900 block of the Northern Administration registry (see RG85-D-1-a, MIKAN 135012) and others being unique to the Resources Division registry.
