Biography / Administrative history

The Office of Indian Commissioner was opened at Winnipeg in 1871. It was moved to Regina in 1887 and back to Winnipeg in 1897. The office was abolished in 1909. RG10 General Inventory.

Many of the early Black (Western) Series files referred to in the Black Series sub-series (MIKAN 157500, R216-245-8-E, RG10-B-3), were created by the office of the Indian Commissioner. When the office closed files were transferred to departmental headquarters in Ottawa and there integrated into the headquarters Black Series filing system.
