Scope and content

The series comprises the research material collected by Mary Rodrik and the notes and manuscript drafts created by both Mary Rodrik and Paul Rodrik in preparation for a biography of Franz Johnston, never published. There are two groups of files. The first was created by Mary Rodrik and organized into chronological periods, numbered from I to XVIII (files IX, XVI and XVII are missing; on the other hand, there are two files each labelled X and XV); the files contain documents dating from 1920 to 1992 and also include some photocopies of archival material. Among the material is literature on Tait McKenzie (file XIII) and letters from R.S. Finnie (file XV). The second group of files was partly created by Mary Rodrik and partly created at the National Archives from loose material (these latter are indicated in the finding aid by square brackets) and are arranged alphabetically by subject; they include the same sort of material as the first group of files, as well as correspondence and documentation on the funding of the research, and date from 1919 to 1994. Among the material are letters from Bess Harris, about Lawren Harris, and from William A. Drake, a former fellow student of Johnston's, dated 1969 and correspondence between Thoreau MacDonald and John W. Sheeres, another former fellow student of Johnston's, 1949 (in the "Correspondence" files); there are also accounts with Eaton's Fine Art Galleries and Laing Galleries regarding Johnston paintings (in the "F.J. Paintings" file).
