Scope and content
The series comprises art items relating, predominantly, to the life and career of Franz Johnston. A few of the drawings could have been executed by his son, Paul Rodrik, although it is not possible to identify which artist was responsible. Included among the 40 items are 9 photomechanical reproductions of Johnston's paintings and several examples of the drawings published in the portfolio entitled "Western Sketchbook"; 2 technical drawings of aeroplanes; 2 chalk figure studies; an unfinished landscape study in tempera; and a mock-up for a visual puzzle composed of cut-outs of coloured paper. Works by others include 2 silkscreen prints by Johnston's daughter, Frances Ann Johnston; a colour woodcut print by Walter Phillips; and a portfolio containing reproductions of Franklin Arbuckle's drawings of workers at several Dow Chemical Company plants.
